Hole In The Ground of the Day: A coffee-table-sized crater of uncertain origin “that splayed debris across a 100-foot area” has officials and experts in New Jersey’s Bernards Township baffled.

Raritan Valley Community College’s planetarium director Jerry Vinski dismissed the possibility of a meteor, telling the Associated Press “We dug around and couldn’t find anything. We used metal detectors because all meteors have metal in them, and we couldn’t find anything, large or small.”

The State Police bomb squad said explosives were not involved, and Bernards Township Police Capt. Edward Byrnes — who says he hasn’t seen anything like this in his 23 years — ruled out any weather-related incidents.

Vinski offered up the possibility that debris from a passing plane may have dug the hole, but CBR’s Robot 6 proposes that the crater heralds Superman’s arrival on Earth, and that’s a much cooler explanation so we’re going with that.
